This is an enchanting legend that explains the origin of the name of the volcano Rincon de la Vieja (lit. The Old Lady’s Corner) in Guanacaste province. The princess Curabanda fell in love with Mixcoac, chief of the neighboring enemy tribe. When her father, Curabande found out about the relationship, he captured Mixcoac and threw him down into the crater of the volcano. Curubanda went to live by the edge of the crater and bore a son. In order to allow for the son to be with his father, she threw him also down into the crater. For the rest of her life, Curubanda lived close to the volcano and became a very powerful healer. The people refer to her case as the “The Old Lady’s Corner”. From then on, the volcano has carried this name
